It's important for you and your parents to file your taxes early and ELECTRONICALLY.
To apply for Financial Aid, you must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) every year. Both you and your parents (if applicable) will need to provide income information from your respective Federal Tax Returns.
NEW! FILLING YOUR TAX RETURNS ELECTRONICALLY WILL SPEED UP THE PROCESSING OF YOUR FAFSA.
When you file your FAFSA there is a new, very important process called IRS Data Retrieval. Electronic tax returns will ensure that IRS Data Retrieval is available to you within two weeks of filing your taxes. If you use a paper tax return it will take at least 6-8 weeks before IRS Data Retrieval is available to you and/or your spouse and your parents.
Steps you should take: Step 1: File taxes electronically.
Step 2 : Apply for a PIN number at www.PIN.ed.gov
This will allow you to electronically sign your FAFSA, Federal Direct Loan Application and access the IRS Data Retrieval process.
Step 3: Gather Your Information
Social Security number
Driver’s license number, if you have one
Records of other untaxed income received (such as Social Security, Temporary Assistance to
Needy Families (TANF), welfare or veterans benefits)
Business records, if applicable
Alien registration number, if you are not a US Citizen
Parent(s) date of birth & Social Security Number
Parent(s) income and financial records (Please make sure to use the IRS Data Retrieval tool)
* Renewal applicants can access their FAFSA on the web using their Federal PIN to update, complete, sign and submit the FAFSA.
Step 4: Submit your FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov and use the IRS Data Retrieval for income questions. It is faster, easier and accurate.
