    Pow(h)er: Opening Reception

    August 1 – September 24
    Curated by Kristin J. DeAngelis and Michelle Vitale

    Opening reception of Pow(h)er a contemporary exhibition honoring the women’s equality movement and the centennial anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Featuring art by Caroline Burton and Jan Huling, both of whom recently exhibited at the Montclair Art Museum; Trix Rosen, whose photography was featured at MOMA in 2018; Ekaterina Abramova, Pam Cooper, Jodie Fink, Blond Jenny, Zoë Sua Kay, Donna Kessinger, Lucy Rovetto, Theda Sandiford, Leslie Sheryll, and Judy Wukitsch.     Teacher as Artist: Katie Niewodowski

    The Department of Cultural Affairs supports local artists through a variety of solo exhibitions throughout the College campus. For the spring semester, we will be featuring the work of Katie Niewodowski.

    Her work is a meditation on the phenomenon of life and the creative structures that perpetuate it. She explores repeating patterns in nature, the interconnectedness of all living beings, and the portal into these networks that the process of art-making provides. Her art will be on view at both campus libraries from August 1 through December 15. For more information, visit our exhibition page.

    DOCA Celebrates Jersey City Pride Week With Artist Reception For Katie Niewodowski

    The Department of Cultural Affairs and Jersey City Pride host mocktails and artist reception for HCCC Professor Katie Niewodowski on the roof terrace during Jersey City’s Pride Week, at the Dineen Hull Gallery Atrium, 71 Sip Ave. 6th Fl. This is an official Jersey City LGBT Pride Festival event in commemoration of Stonewall 50 and celebration of World Pride.     Dineen Hull Gallery, Smush Gallery And Apple Tree House – Three Great Stops To Visit During JC Fridays!

    Stop by Dineen Hull Gallery on JC Fridays to view the all-women contemporary art exhibition Pow(h)er. Then join DOCA for the opening reception of Tangible Imaginings an exhibition, curated by former HCCC Professor Fred Fleisher, featuring the visual artwork of current and past HCCC professors. Round out the night of art and culture with an original play by Speranza Theater Company celebrating the Women’s Suffrage Movement and part of our yearlong partnership with the Jersey City Office of Cultural Affairs.     Come view the Pow(h)er exhibition during JC Fridays, featuring artwork by 13 extraordinary female artists, focusing on a variety of issues including immigration, fertility, and the body.

    Tangible Imaginings

    Tangible Imaginings is an exhibition curated by Fred Fleisher, featuring the visual artwork of Eun Young Choi, Marguerite Day, Laurie Riccadonna, and Woolpunk. Centered on the notion of the Material, the show considers each artist’s manipulations, transformations, and uses of materials to comment upon our larger frame of reference in the everyday. The exhibition is on display through September 29. SMUSH Gallery is an interdisciplinary art space dedicated to creative and community work, founded by multi-disciplinary artist Katelyn Halpern.     Speranza Theatre Company

    Join Speranza Theatre Company and the Apple Tree House for an immersive play experience on September 6, 7, and 8. Founded in 2008, Speranza is a women’s theatre company based in Jersey City that creates thought-provoking collaborative theatre centered on women’s issues and provides an opportunity for artists, particularly females, to share their voice through challenging and entertaining theatre based in honesty and truth.     The Department of Cultural Affairs presents Solo a new exhibition series celebrating projects by mid-career artists on display in the atrium of Dineen Hull Gallery. We are excited to feature Roberta Melzl as our first artist. Melzl’s work is created from an accumulation of sources. It is characterized by the incorporation of various systems of visual representation–embracing elements of technology, architecture, nature, design, and media.     Art of Yoga

    Reflecting back, moving forward. Join entrepreneur and creator of Mindful Play Yoga Jamie Wilson Murray for a 50-minute yoga session. This partnership supports themes in our gallery exhibit Pow(h)er and celebrates the anniversary of the woman suffrage movement and empowerment. The goal of the trilogy is to recognize women’s contributions to the Yoga movement, and to the wellness of everyday life. We recommend bringing your own yoga mat–a limited number of mats will be available.

    Mindful Play Yoga

    Mindful Play Yoga brings out the kid in all of us. Working with children, adults, and caregivers through mindfulness, play, and yoga to see the best in everyone. MPY is committed to inspiring children ages 3 -15 and families to be curious life-long learners.

    HCCC Foundation Artist Talk

    A special HCCC Foundation Artist Talk with artist Karen Finley will be held on Thursday, October 3 which is also the opening day of the Relatable exhibition at the gallery. Karen Finley earned an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, NYSCA, and NEA fellowships, and she teaches at New York University. Finley’s art addresses issues that include the treatment of women, AIDS, and the Holocaust. Working in mediums such as installation, video, performance, public art, visual art, entertainment, television and film, memorials, music, and literature.     The HCCC Art Department offers a wide variety of classes in computer and fine arts taught by professional artists living in the New York metropolitan area. HCCC celebrates the artistic talents of our community with a bi-annual student exhibition in the Dineen Hull Gallery. Join the art department, students, professors, and staff on December 6 for the fall Student Art Exhibition opening reception. Music provided by DOCAS’s house deejay, DJ Vaselli.     Art Fair 14C is an international art fair with a New Jersey core, a nonprofit fair created to strengthen and support the visual arts.
